The Last Five Years - “Nobody Needs to Know” (lyrics)
This song is heart-rending. He’s singing to what seems to be his wife, but you quickly realize that he’s singing to the woman he’s having an affair with. The rest of the song is his angry and resigned justification for cheating. The melody is haunting, the piano/cello instrumentation is gorgeous, and the poetry used to describe his crumbling marriage is poignant.
In the end, his lyric reveals how selfish and twisted his perspective is:
All that I ask for is one little corner \ One private room at the back of my heart \ Tell her I found one, she sends out battalions \ To claim it and blow it apart [as she should!]I grip and she grips, and faster we’re sliding \ Sliding and spilling, and what can I do? \ Come back to bed, kid, take me inside you \ I pormise I won’t lie to youBeautifully sad.
